The newest addition to Lake Lorraine offers sweet treats and a great view.
Baking up a Storm opened today inside The Blu on Lorraine, a new six-story apartment building on the north shore of the lake at the development that includes shopping, housing and offices.

Alex Peterson started his business two years ago, baking at home and selling his baked goods at the Lake Lorraine Farmers Market and Benson’s Flea Market, along with taking custom orders.

Now, having a commercial kitchen will allow him to expand catering to weddings at event venues that require food to be prepared in such facilities.
The bakery is in the lobby on the east end of the building at 2301 S. Lorraine Place. The seating area offers a fireplace and views of the lake from the south windows.

Residents of The Blu can access Baking up a Storm from inside the building or the patio. Other customers can park in the lot at the northeast corner of the building and enter the door there.

“Right now, I’m starting with a limited menu just to get the feel of things,” he said. “I’ll try to do two to three flavors of kolaches, two cupcakes and then bars … or a cookie.”

Customers can find a daily menu on Baking up a Storm’s Facebook page.

In addition to regular coffee, which is made using beans from local roaster Rainy Day Coffee, Baking up a Storm offers vanilla, mocha and caramel flavors and a flavor of the month. For September, that’s pumpkin. There drink menu also has chai tea, hot tea and Naked Juice.

Peterson is starting with hours of 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
He said he starts baking at 4 a.m., so if residents need to leave for work before the bakery opens, they can stop by and he’ll make sure they’re fueled to start their day.
