Chelsea have held talks with Julian Nagelsmann for the first time in person as Todd Boehly’s recruitment team continue their search for the club’s next permanent manager. The Blues have also added Burnley boss Vincent Kompany and Palmeiras coach Abel Ferreira to their shortlist of coaches under consideration to complete their ‘exhaustive’ process of interviewing bosses for the vacancy.
Chelsea have placed Frank Lampard in temporary charge as caretaker manager while the club’s senior officials carry out a lengthy and detailed process to find Graham Potter’s successor. However, he has lost all three of his matches so far, meaning his chances of landing a permanent job are unlikely at this stage.
The club are convinced they must do their due diligence to ensure mistakes are not repeated after Potter’s disastrous reign and are considering at least a dozen of bosses for the vacancy.
Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, Chelsea’s co-sporting directors, are leading the process of recruiting for the head coach job and reportedly held in-person talks with Nagelsmann for the first time on Thursday, with the German thought to be one of the frontrunners along with Luis Enrique.
Carragher thinks Chelsea may have already sealed Nagelsmann agreement [LATEST] According to The Times, Chelsea’s meeting with the former Bayern Munich head coach – sacked in March and replaced by Thomas Tuchel – occurred ‘alongside calls and meetings with other candidates’. It is understood that there is no leading option for the club so far.
Kompany, who has led Burnley to promotion back to the Premier League in his first season with the Clarets, has been added to their shortlist along with Palmeiras’ Ferreira, who has won the Copa Libertadores with the Brazilian side but has no experience managing in the top five European leagues, the report added.
Winstanley and Stewart will be tasked with presenting a list of coaches, which has been whittled down to seven candidates at present, before making a presentation to co-owners Boehly and Behdad Eghbali.

Chelsea ‘trigger extension clause’ in Enzo Fernandez’s contract [GOSSIP] They have already met with Luis Enrique earlier this month after he flew in from Barcelona for talks and it is believed the Spaniard remains a strong contender for the position.
Sporting Lisbon coach Ruben Amorim, rated as one of the top young coaches in Europe and dubbed the ‘new Jose Mourinho’, has also held talks with Boehly and Eghbali on two occasions, despite publicly stating he is happy to remain in Portugal.
Chelsea are currently 11th in the Premier League and face their first season without European football since 2016-17 if they do not win the Champions League.
The American owner clashed with fans inside the stadium during the 2-1 defeat to Brighton and after spending £600million with no real improvement, the pressure is on Boehly to ensure that every step is taken to ensure they have the right candidate after Potter’s disastrous six-month reign.
