All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Bola Tinubu has vowed to conquer poverty in Nigeria if elected in 2023.
Tinubu, who made the pledge at the South-South Region Council meeting in Calabar, Cross River, yesterday, said he will deploy all the human and material resources God has given the country to lift it out of poverty.
The former governor of Lagos denounced the country’s slow pace of growth and development, adding that his administration would change the country’s fortunes.
He said that education remains the best tool to combat poverty, noting that each state in the federation was blessed with abundant natural resources, all of which he promised would be used to change the fortunes of the country.
However, he pointed out that in doing so, there was a need for the people to remain united and stop the destruction of what God had deposited in the country to enhance its greatness.
“My quest to progressively move Nigeria forward is the only reason I am running; no other person is running with me. Those who say they are running don’t have an ounce of honesty in them; they can’t keep their promises, all they care about is insulting me and yet they have no facts. I’m a fighter, but I don’t fight just anybody, my only concern is moving Nigeria forward,” he said.
He vowed to unite Nigerians to ensure steady growth and progress.
“Moving Nigeria forward is a task that must be done, and anger, division, rupture will not solve it; it can only be achieved by being together. Let’s conquer hunger instead of letting hunger conquer us. So let us come together and make great wealth for the nation and our people,” he said.
The presidential candidate said that Cross River had the potential to be the tourist center of Africa.
Speaking earlier, Governor Ben Ayade stressed the need for the country to return to agriculture, if the desire to defeat hunger is to be achieved.
Ayade lamented that, with its vast land, Nigeria has not reached its full potential, particularly in the area of agriculture.
“It is a pity that we are only using our enormous cocoa to import poverty, because we do not have the industry to add value to the product. The same with our huge bitumen deposit, because we import used bitumen for road construction. That is why I say that Tinubu is being summoned by God to come and change the narrative of Nigeria. He did it in Lagos when he conquered the Atlantic Ocean. He also did many other great things in the state and I am optimistic that he will replicate the same in Nigeria, if he is elected president,” Ayade said.
Meanwhile, the governor of Katsina state, Aminu Bello Masari, has assured that Tinubu would not Islamize Nigeria if he were elected president.
“Leadership is about justice for people, even for animals. Lagos is a mini Nigeria. Both Christians and Muslims and pagans are in Lagos. At one point, you cannot drive in Lagos with your car windows fully open because of thieves. Hardly a day went by without seeing a dead body in the dumps.
“But when Tinubu became governor for eight years, he brought sanity to Lagos. There is no basis in expressing the fear that Tinubu will Islamize Nigeria. Is not true. Buhari Islamized Nigeria after seven years in office? Obasanjo Christianized Nigeria after eight years in office. Did Jonathan make Nigeria a Christian country after six years in office? I can tell you that if you gather all the presidential candidates before a blind man, he will choose Tinubu ”.
Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State expressed optimism that Tinubu would win the 2023 election.
“The big problem in this country is bitter politics. But when young men and women come together for a common cause without bitterness, there is hope for this country. We have to choose a candidate who is proven and trusted. This is Ahmed Tinubu. He was governor for eight years. He chose a successor who was liked by the people. History will repeat itself. During the military rule under General Ibrahim Babangida’s transition to civilian rule, there was an election between MKO Abiola and Alhaji Bashir Tofa of SDP and NRC. Abiola’s running mate was a Muslim. It was a Muslim-Muslim formula that won the elections. Tofa who chose a Christian running mate lost the election. Then Tinubu will win the elections.”
Laying out the reasons why APC governors from the north decided to support a presidential candidate from the south, Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai said: “In the spirit of unity, fairness and justice in the country, after of President Buhari’s term, it is only fair that the presidency should go south. And we met in the Katsina lodge before the governor Aminu Bello Masari who said that among all the presidential candidates we should go for Ahmed Tinubu because of his trajectory while he was governor of Lagos”.
The three governors spoke at a town hall meeting with a group of Christians from northern Nigeria.
Senator Oluremi Tinubu, wife of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, expressed her satisfaction with the Christian group, saying her husband would not let them down if he came to power, describing him as a workaholic and generous man “full of intelligence”.
