Town board approves contract with streaming service for two-day shoot during last week of April
Netflix will be filming “Leave The World Behind,” an adaptation of the acclaimed novel by Rumaan Alam, starring Julia Roberts and Mahershala Ali, in the Town of Riverhead this month.
The Riverhead Town Board yesterday approved a contract with Netflix productions authorizing the shoot on two days during the last week of the month. Netflix will notify the town by April 11 which two days, plus a rain date, will be film production days.
Filming will take place on portions of Hulse Landing Road, Sound Avenue, Twomey Avenue and Horton Avenue. The areas of the designated roadways will be subject to closure, on a rotating basis, on the two film production days.
Netflix will pay Riverhead Town $75,000 as compensation for the use of town roads and to cover the cost of Riverhead police officers assigned to the production for road closure, traffic control and escorts — the bulk of the fee — as well as the cost of non-police personnel. Netflix agreed to pay the town additional compensation for costs incurred by the town not covered by the base fee.
Alam’s novel, published in October 2020, was a finalist for the 2020 National Book Award and was named a best book of the year by The Washington Post, NPR, Time and others. The suspense novel is the story of two families who don’t know each other forced together on a long weekend in a remote area of Long Island. It has been adapted for the screen by “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail, who is also directing the Nexflix film.
