Trend Micro this week announced patches for a high-severity arbitrary file upload vulnerability in Apex Central that has already been exploited in what appear to be targeted attacks.
Impacting both on-premises and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) versions of the centralized management console, the security hole is tracked as CVE-2022-26871 (CVSS score of 8.6) and it was discovered by Trend Micro’s own research team.
After deploying patches for the SaaS version in early March, Trend Micro has now released Patch 3 (Build 6016) for on-premises installations of Apex Central.
The security hole, the company explains, allows an unauthenticated attacker to upload an arbitrary file remotely, which could result in remote code execution.
The cybersecurity solutions provider says it has already observed attempts to exploit the bug, albeit in a “very limited number of instances.” However, the company did not provide specific information on these attacks.
“Trend Micro has observed at least one active attempt of potential exploitation of this vulnerability in-the-wild,” the company notes in its advisory.

Exploitation of such vulnerabilities may only be possible in certain circumstances, but Trend Micro is encouraging all customers to update to a patched version as soon as possible.
The company also released a series of IPS rules and filters for Trend Micro Cloud One and Trend Micro Deep Discovery Inspector, to help protect against exploitation attempts.
Over the past few years, Trend Micro issued several advisories warning users about the exploitation of a vulnerability affecting the company’s products.
On Thursday, the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) instructed federal agencies to address this vulnerability in their environments.
CISA added the bug to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog along with several other security issues, including a recent critical remote code execution vulnerability in Sophos Firewall.

Hackers rarely hack in anymore. They log in using stolen, weak, default, or otherwise compromised credentials. That’s why it’s so critical to break the password dependency cycle. But how can this be done?
Cybersecurity-related risk is a top concern, so boards need to know they have the proper oversight in place. Even as first-timers, successful CISOs make for successful board members.
A threat-based approach to security often focuses on a checklist to meet industry requirements but overlooked the key component of security: reducing risk.
